What Are the Best Cruising Grounds Near Monaco?

The cruising grounds surrounding Monaco are truly unmatched. The French Riviera is one of the world’s great yachting destinations, and there is no better way to explore it than aboard a luxury charter yacht. Here are some of the top destinations within easy reach:

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat

Cap d’Ail & Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat

Just a short cruise west of Monaco, these two destinations offer a more peaceful contrast to the principality’s buzz. Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is one of the most exclusive residential areas on the entire Côte d’Azur, dotted with grand villas, beautiful beaches, and charming restaurants; a perfect opportunity to drop anchor and explore at a leisurely pace.

Nice on French Riviera

Nice & Villefranche-sur-Mer

Nice is the vibrant heart of the French Riviera, offering a superb blend of culture, cuisine, and coastline. Nearby Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of the most picturesque anchorages in the Mediterranean, with its deep natural bay offering calm waters and a stunning backdrop of pastel-colored townhouses.

Lérins Islands near Cannes

Cannes & the Lérins Islands

Cannes is synonymous with glamour: home to the legendary Cannes Film Festival and the Cannes Yachting Festival, both of which are excellent occasions for a yacht charter. Just offshore, the Lérins Islands offer a welcome contrast: pine-fringed, car-free islands with clear waters and a tranquil atmosphere ideal for a day charter away from the crowds.

Cap d'Antibes, South of France

Cap d’Antibes

One of the most storied headlands on the Riviera, Cap d’Antibes combines natural beauty with legendary history. The Cap is home to the iconic Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc and some of the most beautiful anchorages on the coast, making it a firm favorite on any Monaco yacht charter itinerary.

View of the city of Saint-Tropez

St. Tropez

The ultimate Riviera destination, St. Tropez needs little introduction. Sandy beaches, legendary beach clubs, and a harbor packed with the world’s finest superyachts make this a must-visit on any Côte d’Azur charter. Cruise west from Monaco and arrive in style.

Menton, France

Roquebrune-Cap-Martin & Menton

Cruise east from Monaco and discover the quieter, equally beautiful stretch of coastline toward the Italian border. Roquebrune-Cap-Martin offers a medieval hilltop village and secluded anchorages, while Menton is known as the “Pearl of France” for its colorful old town, lemon groves, and laid-back atmosphere. From here, the Italian coastline is just a short sail away.

The best time for a monaco yacht charter is during the summer months, when the weather is at its finest and the Mediterranean Sea is warm and inviting. The charter fee for a luxury yacht charter in Monaco starts at around US$200,000 per week and rises well beyond one million for the world’s finest superyachts, depending on the size of the vessel, the itinerary, and the length of the charter. Moran Yacht & Ship has access to an exceptional fleet of motor yachts and superyachts built by pedigree shipbuilders including Lürssen, Feadship, Amels, Nobiskrug, and Oceanco.

On top of the base charter fee, an Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) covers variable costs such as fuel, berthing fees, and provisioning (food and drinks). The APA is typically around 10% of the base charter rate, paid in advance. The captain will manage these costs throughout the charter and provide a full breakdown at the end. Any remaining funds are refunded promptly. You’re welcome to ask the captain for an APA update at any point during your trip.

The amenities on your charter yacht will depend on the size of the vessel, but Moran’s Monaco fleet includes some of the world’s finest yachts. Onboard amenities can include hot tubs, swimming pools, cinema rooms, fully equipped gyms, spa facilities, jet skis and water sports equipment, tenders, helipads, beach clubs, and luxurious salons and staterooms.

All charter yachts are fully crewed, with service levels that rival the world’s best hotels. The number of crew members scales with the size of the vessel: smaller yachts will typically have at least three crew (captain, deckhand, and stewardess), while the largest superyachts can carry a crew of 20 or more, including dive masters, sommeliers, spa therapists, personal trainers, and a full culinary team.

Most charter yachts accommodate a maximum of 12 guests while underway, though some vessels are certified to carry more. Contact Moran, and we’ll match you with the right boat for your group.

Monaco’s events calendar is one of the most glamorous in the world, and a yacht charter is the perfect opportunity to experience these occasions in style. Key events include:

  • Monaco Grand Prix (May) — a Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter is the ultimate F1 experience, with yachts moored in prime positions in Port Hercules offering unbeatable panoramic views of the circuit
  • Monaco Yacht Show (September) — a highlight on the annual superyacht calendar, held in Port Hercule
  • The Rose Ball (March) — a high-profile charity gala held by the Société des Bains de Mer, attracting VIPs, celebrities, and royalty

Monaco has several excellent berthing options:

Port Hercules

Without question, one of the world’s most iconic glamorous ports, Port Hercules is a natural deep-water harbor just moments from Monte-Carlo. With depths ranging from 5 to 40 meters, it can accommodate the world’s largest mega yachts and offers superb facilities, including the Monaco Yacht Club designed by architect Lord Norman Foster.

Port of Fontvieille

A smaller, well-protected harbor located in the district of Fontvieille on the French border. Berths here are reserved in advance, and it does not accept transiting vessels.

Port of Cala del Forte

Monaco’s newest marina, located just over the border in Ventimiglia, Italy. It offers world-class facilities with luxury shops, restaurants, and a shipyard on the waterfront, and is connected to Port Hercules by regular high-speed shuttles reserved exclusively for marina guests.

Getting to Monaco:

Most charter guests fly into Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, which is served by multiple international commercial airlines and has private jet facilities. The most seamless way to transfer to Monaco is by helicopter: landing either at the Fontvieille helipad or directly on your charter yacht if it has a helipad or touch-and-go facilities. Moran can assist with all helicopter transfers and transportation arrangements.
